Beginners should start with an aromatic, otherwise known as a flavored blend. Such as our Wilshire, or a similar light aromatic Burley/Virginia blend such as Sunset. Keep the pouched closed when possible to keep it fresh. Experimenting with different blends is half of the fun of pipe smoking.
To get started what you will need besides a pipe and tobacco, of course is pipe cleaners, a pipe tool, and of course a lighter or matches. One important rule with pipe smoking is to never use a lighter with a blue flame because it will harm the briar wood the pipe is made of.

Packing the pipe with tobacco is an art form and has a great effect on the amount of time the pipe stays lit. You should Lets move on to the matter of packing and lighting. Pack the tobacco a bit at a time and be sure to leave a little spring in tobacco. Packing the bow too tightly will make it hard to draw.
If the pipe is new, you may find it more pleasent to rub a fingertip of honey in the bottom of the bowl. This will help give you the broken in taste a well used pipe will have.
If you have trouble keeping your pipe lit, don't be discouraged, everyone has to relight their pipe while smoking it. If you happen to hear a gurgle while you are smoking, you need to let your pipe cool down, then clean it with a pipe cleaner thoroughly. Also, smoking the same pipe more than one time in a day can be bad for the pipe.
